Combating Floridians biggest fear in 5 easy steps

It's no secret that Southwest Florida temperatures are heating up, and as we continue into summer, temperatures will only be increasing. Unfortunately, the summer sun can mean more wear and tear on your air conditioning unit. Luckily, there are preventative steps you can take to avoid that midsummer nightmare Floridians hope NEVER happens - an A/C outage.

Change Your Air Filter Regularly

This is a simple task that can have a large return on your air conditioning unit. A large number of HVAC issues are caused by overly dirty or clogged air filters. Replacing your air filter every 90 days, or less if you own pets, can prevent inadequate airflow due to a clogged air filter which overtime may damage your entire HVAC system, causing important components to break down.

Insulation is Important

In Florida, heat typically flows from warm outdoor areas to an air-conditioned indoor area, however, insulation can reduce the amount of heat that flows, which in-turn can reduce your heating and cooling costs. The better your home is insulated, the less hard your air conditioning unit has to work to keep your home cool, and the longer your unit can last through the summers.

Your Unit Should Match the Size of Your Space

In the past, many homeowners began upsizing their HVAC units with the idea that a more powerful system, would keep their home even cooler as temperatures began to rise. Unfortunately, this can be detrimental in keeping your home cool on a constant basis if the HVAC unit is significantly too large for your home. Instead, we recommend focusing on the insulation of your home and keeping the size of your HVAC unit congruent with the size of your home.

Perform Annual HVAC Checks

Checking up on the safety and maintenance of your air conditioning system is a must, especially for Florida residents. With a safety and maintenance check, a professional technician can clean and repair or replace any worn or broken parts, examine power sources, do a thermostat test to verify the air output matches up with thermostat settings, and provide additional tips that may improve your system's efficiency to help lower energy costs and prevent outages.

Refrain from any Unnecessary Strain or Electrical Overload

Successfully get your home through Florida's hot summers by taking easy preventatives like closing your curtains or blinds to reduce the temperature in your home, using your ceiling fans, avoiding overuse of your stove or oven excessively, turning of the lights, and limiting your use of energy-hogging appliances, and preprogram your thermostat.
